Fabric Structure: A Strength in Many Industry

While tensile fabric structures provide great opportunities for covered areas, there are still a thousand other construction methods by which a covered outdoor area could be achieved. One of the greatest benefits of tensile fabric structures is that they are translucent. The woven base cloth along with the appropriate coating allows light transmission value at around 10%. And this provides a comfortable illumination as compared to the full brightness of the outside. Glass and polycarbonate are translucent as well, but the light levels under the canopy remain quite similar to those outside, thus on very bright days these materials offer little respite.

Another factor that puts fabric ahead of the other materials is the clear span capabilities it has. While the other roofing material may require rigid intermediate support, a fabric can span from one boundary right across the opposite side in one unbroken sweep. The advantage is that there are no difficult or awkward sealing details that should be addressed. Since the fabric has an amazing tensile capacity, its effects are to reduce the supporting framework to a minimum number of components, all of which are working efficiently as a system. In return, this leads to a more lightweight structure than any other kinds of construction. When it comes to cost, foundations are easier and cheaper to prepare than those visible and above the ground constructions which are exposed to weather and damage.

A tensile canopy is an excellent solution for entrance canopy. It can act both as a shelter for those who are leaving and entering the building and it can make the entrance area be clearly visible even from a far distance. The 3d nature of the majority of canopy structures is unique as a building form, making it quickly form a visual focus of attention. When using a more traditional structure like a tiled roof or a flat glass or polycarbonate canopy, these are not likely to stand out clearly. Fabric structures when properly engineered and installed are virtually immune to weathering and damage. Given that they are unlikely to be susceptible to accidental damages from passing vehicles or some falling objects, or even acts of vandalism, these structures provide a reassuringly simple, yet durable solution. Clients are also assured that in every installed structured, there is a full calculation to justify all components of a system.

All roofing materials may collect dirt and debris on the surface, whether it is glass, polycarbonate, fabric or opaque material. With polycarbonate or glass, the dirt is clearly seen, but with the light diffusing properties of the fabric means that the dirt surface is not easily identified. It is also quite surprising how a membrane can look from below, and when you look at the top surface you see that there is quite a build up of dirt. Coated fabrics have a very good UV absorbing and reflection properties. This means that they offer a safe shade to all users, while providing them with a very comfortable level of light.
